Lowering Our Carbon Footprint

We are lowering our carbon footprint by optimizing the operations of our assets, making select investments in renewables and lower-carbon products, and continuing to expand our natural gas business.

GHG Intensity

Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions

We are committed to reducing the carbon footprint of our operations and the products we manufacture through energy-efficiency improvements that enhance performance and long-term resiliency. We work to optimize our assets, strategically invest in emerging technologies, expand our natural gas business and collaborate across sectors to drive efficiency improvements.

Our GHG emissions reduction performance is an indicator of how efficiently we operate our facilities and our reduction target drives us to implement initiatives that reduce the GHG emissions intensity of our company. It encompasses both Scope 1 emissions — direct emissions from our operations — and Scope 2 emissions — indirect emissions from the electricity and steam we purchase to support our business activities.

In 2025, we achieved our 2030 target. We delivered a 30% reduction in emissions intensity from our 2014 baseline five years ahead of schedule — and we continue to make progress toward our 2035 target.

Improving Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is one of our key metrics with both environmental and financial benefits. By identifying where energy can be conserved cost-effectively, we reduce our operating costs and reduce our environmental footprint.

Our Focus on Energy program is our holistic approach to improving energy efficiency to drive continuous improvement and reduce GHG emissions. Through this program, we have achieved meaningful results, including avoiding nearly a billion Btu per hour of energy use and generating more than $28 million in savings in 2025, equivalent to the annual energy use of approximately 60,000 homes or 100,000 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles. These efforts support both operational efficiency and emissions-reduction objectives.

MPLX GP Methane Intensity

Reducing Methane Emissions

Through MPC's master limited partnership, MPLX LP, we operate one of the largest natural gas gathering and processing networks in the country. Natural gas, which consists primarily of methane, emits about half the carbon dioxide of coal when used to generate electricity.

MPLX Natural Gas and NGL Services manages methane emissions through a measurement-informed, data-driven Focus on Methane program. As this approach has matured, Methane Matters represents the next phase of our strategy — building on progress to address changing market expectations, advancing technologies and evolving regulations. Our strategy emphasizes continuous improvement, operational accountability, environmental performance and progress in emissions management.

Some key focus areas we are actively addressing include lowering fugitive emissions from equipment, replacing pneumatic controllers, optimizing maintenance venting, implementing equipment-specific and operational emissions controls and employing advanced monitoring technologies.
