The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has honored six refineries from Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC) with 2025 ENERGY STAR® certifications for superior energy efficiency, which ties MPC’s 2022 industry record for refinery certifications in one year. These certifications signify performance in the top 25% of similar facilities nationwide throughout 2024.

Among MPC’s recognized refineries, the Canton, Ohio, and Garyville, Louisiana, refineries received certifications for the 20^th consecutive year, which represents every year that refineries have been eligible for this achievement. MPC’s four other certified refineries for 2025 include:

• Robinson, Illinois, refinery – eighth consecutive certification; 11th overall  
• Paul Park, Minnesota, refinery – seventh consecutive certification; eighth overall 
• Anacortes, Washington, refinery – sixth consecutive and overall certification
• Salt Lake City, Utah, refinery – first certification

The EPA relies on Solomon Associates’ Energy Intensity Index™ (EII®) metric for benchmarking petroleum refineries. Refineries qualify for certification by achieving top-quartile energy efficiency performance based on EII® scoring within a refinery size class, as well as meeting strict environmental compliance requirements.

“The success of these refineries is linked to our Focus on Energy (FOE) program of key performance indicators, which helps target opportunities for reducing energy consumption and lowering greenhouse gas emissions,” said MPC Refining Environmental Senior Director Tim Peterkoski. “In 2024, the FOE program helped us avoid the equivalent of 1.3 billion Btu per hour of energy use. To put this in perspective, this is roughly the amount of energy used by over 80,000 U.S. homes or 140,000 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles.”

In addition to using less energy than average-performing industrial plants, the EPA notes that ENERGY STAR-certified plants generate fewer combustion-related emissions and are less expensive to operate on an energy basis.

MPC’s six certifications this year raise the overall number of refinery certifications the company has received to 79. This total is more than all other refining companies combined since refineries became eligible for certifications in 2006.

Additional recognition 

The office building that serves MPC’s workforce in San Antonio, Texas, also earned a 2025 ENERGY STAR certification. To become certified, commercial buildings must receive a score of 75 or higher as calculated by the ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager®, EPA's online tool for measuring and tracking energy use. A score in this range reflects energy efficiency in the top 25% of similar buildings nationwide.

The 659,000-square-foot building in San Antonio received a score of 79. This year’s certification is the building’s sixth consecutive and tenth overall.
