  • The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce named Marathon Petroleum’s Canton refinery a recipient of its 2023 Business Excellence Award.
  • The award honors local businesses for their longstanding commitment to safety, sustainability, education and community.
  • Refinery employees and contractors combined to log over 2,000 hours of volunteerism in 2022 supporting a variety of nonprofits.

Marathon Petroleum’s refinery in Canton, Ohio, was recently recognized for its innovative and long-lasting record and commitment to the community by the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce at its annual awards banquet in May.

The Canton refinery took home one of the chamber’s coveted Business Excellence Awards for what the Chamber characterized as the refinery’s “unrelenting commitment to safety, sustainability, education and community.”

“Marathon Petroleum’s commitment and successes are vital to the continued growth and economic strength of our region,” President & CEO of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce Dennis P. Saunier said. “We look forward to continuing to work together to create the necessary business climate for our community to compete locally, nationally and globally.”

“We are your neighbors, we live in the same communities as you, and we too want what’s best for this place we all call home.”

The chamber also recognized the Canton refinery for supporting numerous community and nonprofit organizations throughout the year including United Way of Greater Stark County, Dueber Elementary School Partnership, Leadership Stark County, veteran’s outreach program, Nimishillen Creek and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Rob Dugan, Area Team Leader at the refinery, accepted the award on behalf of the refinery.

“Aside from fueling the Canton community, we are passionate about giving back and a big part of that is through volunteerism,” said Dugan.

In 2022 alone, employees and contractors from the refinery logged over 2,000 volunteer hours in the community; something Dugan, who grew up near the facility, says is just one of the reasons he took great pride in accepting the award on behalf of his peers.

“As a kid, I would drive by and always ask myself, ‘What goes on behind the fence, who works there, what do they do?’” said Dugan. “After working at Marathon for many years now, I can proudly answer those questions: We are your neighbors, we live in the same communities as you, and we too want what’s best for this place we all call home.”

In 2021, the Canton refinery celebrated its 90th Anniversary.
