Foundation, Anacortes, Washington, St. Paul Park, Minnesota, Robinson, Illinois, Garyville, Louisiana, Galveston Bay, Texas, Los Angeles, California, Detroit, Michigan, Canton, Ohio, Catlettsburg, KentuckyAs students prepared for the new school year, Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC) employees fundraised, volunteered, and supported local organizations to help make sure those in need had the essentials for success. Read about just some of these efforts from around our locations.
Anacortes, Washington
The Anacortes refinery supported the Helping Hands Food Bank with its Stuff the Bus Donation Drive. With MPC’s donation match, employees and contractors raised $32,000 for the food bank. Terminal employees and drivers from our third-party customers at the Anacortes terminal also donated more than a ton of food at the truck rack.
Canton, Ohio
Employees from our Canton terminal held a school supply drive supporting Gibbs Elementary School in Canton, Ohio. Nearly 600 supplies were donated through the support of Canton terminal operations and Canton fleet drivers.
Catlettsburg, Kentucky
Thanks to generous employees and contractors from the Catlettsburg refinery, close to 100 students from five different elementary schools in Kentucky received new backpacks ahead of the new school year. The students were from elementary schools in Catlettsburg, Ponderosa, Raceland, Fairview and Argillite.
Detroit, Michigan
The Detroit refinery hosted its annual Back to School Blitz, the final event of the Fueling Detroit at Kemeny series for the year. More than 500 people attended. Volunteers handed out school supplies and free meals. All students had the opportunity to receive a free haircut, hairstyle and dental services. The event also invited organizations focused on health, safety and quality of life, including Habitat for Humanity Detroit staff who signed up homeowners in the nearby community in need of critical home repairs.
Findlay, Ohio
The Human Resources team at MPC’s office in Findlay sponsored a backpack drive and donated 36 backpacks plus shoes, socks and hygiene items for children at Open Arms Domestic Violence Center and Hope House. Employees teamed up with Clothe-A-Child of Ohio, Inc., which donated the shoes.
Galveston Bay, Texas
Employees and contractors from the Galveston Bay refinery topped their $10,000 goal for this year’s Stuff the Bus event and raised nearly $12,000 to benefit the campaign to purchase school supplies for students in Texas City.
Garyville, Louisiana
Just before the school year started, more than two dozen employees from the Garyville refinery helped distribute backpacks and school supplies to over 700 students in the local community. MPC was a title sponsor of the annual event held at the St. John Community Center in partnership with Blessed To Be A Blessing, Inc.
Indianapolis, Indiana
The Transport & Rail – Operations team in Indianapolis volunteered at the Urban League Back-to-School Block Party. They handed out supplies, stuffed backpacks and met with the families who attended.
Los Angeles, California
The Los Angeles refinery’s Black employee network chapter held its fourth annual back-to-school event supporting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson (BGCC). Network members donated and distributed a variety of school supplies to student members of the BGCC. Members have been an active partner of the BGCC throughout the year, including taking part in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) event at the club as part of its Juneteenth event.
Robinson, Illinois
The Robinson refinery’s Women's employee network chapter hosted a back-to-school supply drive and collected 13 bookbags full of school supplies to donate to the local NOW Program, where about 370 children were signed up to receive school supplies. The Women’s employee network members also hosted a clothing drive to donate to the NOW Program.
San Antonio, Texas
MPC and the ARISE Women’s employee network chapter in San Antonio teamed up with Communities in Schools San Antonio to support the Stuff the Bus school supply drive in preparation for the upcoming school year. Employees donated 30 boxes of school supplies and raised $2,300 to support other back-to-school needs.
St. Paul Park, Minnesota
The St. Paul Park refinery placed collection boxes throughout its operations to collect school supplies for the Friends In Need Food Shelf. The nonprofit organization held a back-to-school giveaway for local students and refinery staff volunteered to help.
Marathon Pipe Line
Marathon Pipe Line employees from the Boise area donated school supplies to over 900 students from the Shiloh Hills Elementary School in Spokane, Washington, and to children of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribe in southeastern Idaho.
MPL employees from the LA Basin Region participated in two events where students were provided with school supplies.
During the 12th Annual Back to School Bash at Scherer Park in Long Beach, California, they helped provide over 1,000 children with necessary school supplies and over 600 families access to community resources.
At the Back to School Block Party in the Compton and Long Beach, California, communities, employee volunteers had the opportunity to pass out school supplies to approximately 400 students and share the importance of pipeline safety with parents.
