Marathon Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: MPC) and its midstream affiliate MPLX LP (NYSE: MPLX) have published two joint reports that provide details on the companies’ progress toward sustainability-related goals and their perspectives on the risks and opportunities associated with the ongoing evolution of the energy industry.

2024 Sustainability Report

The companies’ 2024 Sustainability Report provides insight into how the companies advance environmental stewardship, empower their people, engage their stakeholders and communities to create shared value, and execute work with integrity. The report describes the various programs and processes Marathon and MPLX have put in place to ensure they continue to make progress, provides details on how their programs have been executed, and presents detailed metrics to demonstrate how they have performed.

In the report, “we explain the connection between what we do – the critical work of providing energy – and how we do it,” says Maryann Mannen, president and CEO of both Marathon and MPLX. “We consider the how to be just as important as the what, which is why sustainability is one of the criteria we use to measure our success.”

Highlights described in the 2024 Sustainability Report include:

  • Designated Environmental Incidents (DEIs) – a metric the companies use to track the number and severity of incidents – were the lowest in six years, and the most severe DEIs were down more than 30% from 2023.
  • Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions intensity is down 28% from a 2014 baseline.
  • Freshwater withdrawal intensity is down 18% from a 2016 baseline.
  • MPLX has reduced methane emissions intensity 59% from 2016 levels.
  • Marathon’s refineries have earned more U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ENERGY STAR® recognitions than all other refiners combined.
  • Marathon was recognized in 2025 as one of America’s most just companies by JUST Capital, which ranked the company as industry best in terms of how it invests in its employees.
  • Marathon and MPLX employees reported over 57,000 volunteer hours with charitable organizations in 2024.
  • Contributions to philanthropic organizations – from Marathon, MPLX, their employees and fundraising partners – amounted to approximately $34 million last year.

2025 Perspectives on Climate-Related Scenarios

Having published their first report on climate-related scenarios in 2017, Marathon and MPLX have a track record of transparency about how they stress-test their strategies, assumptions and operations against a range of potential scenarios. A component of the companies’ strong governance and robust enterprise risk management, the Perspectives on Climate-Related Scenarios report describes how Marathon and MPLX plan against long-term and short-term scenarios as part of identifying both risks and opportunities.

The report details the companies’ various areas of operations – petroleum refining, natural gas and NGLs, and renewables – and examines the risks and opportunities each of them faces under various scenarios, including those from the International Energy Agency. It does so by discussing how the companies’ business planning and capital allocation take into account the identified risks and opportunities. The report also describes how the companies manage physical risks to their assets, such as hardening them against sea-level changes and weather extremes, and provides visibility to a variety of metrics, including greenhouse gas emissions, water use, and operational activity levels.

“We provide a detailed, clear-eyed analysis of our refining assets’ resilience relative to the rest of the industry – both domestically and globally – as well as that of our midstream, particularly related to its role in meeting natural gas demand,” says Mannen. “Even under the most carbon-constrained scenarios, we expect these areas of our business to be well-positioned and cost-competitive over the long term.”

The 2024 Sustainability Report and 2025 Perspectives on Climate-Related Scenarios report are both available on Marathon’s and MPLX’s Sustainability web pages.
