Marathon Petroleum was recognized as a leader in energy efficiency by freight transportation company Norfolk Southern at a ceremony in Atlanta in January. Marathon Petroleum was one of four companies to receive Norfolk Southern’s inaugural Thoroughbred Sustainability Partner Award in the Energy Efficiency category.

“We started our Focus on Energy program in 2010 as the cornerstone of our overarching strategy to effectively manage and reduce energy usage at our refineries,” said Riley Morman, National Accounts Sales Manager at Marathon Petroleum. “It’s an honor to be recognized today by a longstanding business partner as a leader in sustainability and be able to help others achieve the same goals.”

Marathon Petroleum’s Focus on Energy program has achieved significant energy reductions and cost savings, including avoiding the equivalent of nearly 2 billion Btu per hour of energy use and over $65 million per year in costs. It’s roughly the same amount of energy used by over 100,000 homes or 200,000 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles in a year.

Over the year, Marathon Petroleum will collaborate with Norfolk Southern on environmental efforts and initiatives to further shared sustainability goals.
