At the Coast Guard Foundation’s Texas Salutes the Coast Guard event in Houston on Nov. 21, 2024, Marathon Petroleum Corp. (MPC) was recognized for its industry leadership, commitment to safety and support of local communities. The honor highlights a partnership between MPC and the foundation.

“For more than 25 years, MPC has been a proud partner of the Coast Guard,” said Shawn Lyon, MPC’s senior vice president of Logistics & Storage, who accepted the recognition on the company’s behalf. “Our shared commitment to safety, service and community has been at the heart of this partnership. We’re equally proud to honor the brave men and women of the Coast Guard who selflessly serve our communities and country every day.”

MPC’s connection to the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) extends far beyond its operations. The company also has a long history of supporting morale and wellness programs through the Coast Guard Foundation and stepped up to provide critical assistance when needed, including in 2016 when a helicopter crashed in the USCG’s Pacific Area (District 14).

“We are in this together, and it’s an honor to play even a small role in supporting the incredible efforts of the USCG as we work toward building a stronger, safer future.”

“This is a relationship that runs deep and a partnership that goes far beyond the water,” said Susan Ludwig, president of the Coast Guard Foundation. “Marathon Petroleum has been a steadfast partner and their commitment to safety and their willingness to go above and beyond continues to make a real difference.”

MPC has deep roots in maritime operations, operating vessels and terminals along the U.S. East, Gulf and West coasts as well as inland waterways, supported by a strong partnership with the USCG and a reputation for safety and environmental stewardship. In 2022, MPC received its tenth Rear Admiral William M. Benkert Marine Environmental Protection Award for Excellence, recognizing the company’s dedication to protecting oceans and waterways.

The Coast Guard Foundation also honored MPC for its impact promoting science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education and supporting groups like Junior Achievement, the Boys and Girls Club and nonprofits addressing hunger and homelessness.
