The Smithburg Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) in a rural area of West Virginia was faced with a difficult decision after its fire truck was placed out of service permanently due to mechanical issues.

“We were forced to purchase a newer fire truck to continue to provide much needed services to the community that depends on us,” said Smithburg Volunteer Fire Chief Samuel Sponaugle. “We had to take out a loan, because we didn’t have the full amount saved.”

In June, MPLX presented the Smithburg VFD a $25,000 grant to help pay off the debt.

“This grant allowed us to continue to provide high quality service to our community,” said Sponaugle. “We are extremely grateful for our partnership with Marathon and their continued support.”

Chris Skoloski, Personal Safety Professional, and Michael Cork, Advanced Administrative Assistant for MPLX presented a check for $25,000 to Smithburg Volunteer Fire Department Chief Samuel Sponaugle.
