The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) awarded the Marathon Petroleum Romulus terminal Michigan Voluntary Protection Program STAR certification, recognizing the facility’s outstanding workplace safety and health management system.

MIOSHA representatives joined Marathon employees and leadership for a certification ceremony to recognize the achievement. The MVPP STAR is MIOSHA’s highest workplace safety and health recognition, awarded to employers that demonstrate exemplary safety and health management systems that go above and beyond MIOSHA requirements.

“Marathon Petroleum’s Romulus terminal has demonstrated that a strong safety culture requires leadership commitment, employee involvement and a continuous focus on identifying and preventing hazards,” said MIOSHA Director Bart Pickelman. “This certification reflects the hard work of employees and management to uphold workplace safety and health as a core value.”

MVPP recognizes employers with effective safety and health management systems that include strong management commitment, meaningful employee involvement, comprehensive hazard prevention and control, worksite analysis and safety and health training.

The Romulus terminal is Marathon Petroleum’s sixth MVPP STAR site in Michigan, giving Marathon the most MVPP STAR worksites of any employer in the state. The other Marathon locations include the Lansing terminal, North Muskegon terminal, Niles terminal, Marathon Pipe Line Woodhaven cavern facility and Detroit refinery.

The Romulus terminal is a 26-acre facility that includes two production buildings and 10 other structures. The site’s certification recognizes Marathon’s ongoing efforts to prevent workplace injuries and illnesses through strong safety and health practices, employee engagement and continuous improvement.
