Earth Day is a reminder of our shared responsibility to care for the environment. At Marathon Petroleum, our Core Values guide our commitment to safe and environmentally responsible operations every day. Some of our teams marked Earth Day through hands-on activities and meaningful community investments. Take a look at a few of the activities at our sites.

Anacortes, Washington

Anacortes refinery employees volunteered for the annual Adopt-a-Highway Earth Day cleanup. Volunteers tackled a two-mile stretch of Highway 20 near the refinery, dedicating about three hours each to the effort. Their hard work paid off, collecting a total of 31 bags of trash, along with a couple of car bumpers and other car parts. This is the fifth consecutive year that Marathon has sponsored this section of the highway.

Bellflower, California

Marathon Pipe Line’s Pacific West Region employees volunteered at the City of Bellflower’s first Earth Day celebration at Butterfly Garden Park. The event featured family-friendly games and activities, including face painting and pot painting. Guests also received oak tree saplings, seeds and plants.

Cadiz, Ohio

The MPLX Cadiz office hosted a Bring Your Child to Work Day event on Earth Day. Children and their parents planted four pear trees around the lake behind the office.

Canton, Ohio

Our Canton refinery team in Ohio marked Earth Day by hosting a community Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day, giving local residents a safe and responsible way to dispose of often-overlooked hazardous materials.

The event was a major success and a true collaborative effort between refinery employees and community members, working together to make a positive environmental impact while celebrating Earth Day.

Denver, Colorado

Our Denver office hosted a sustainable landscapes-themed event and shared flower seeds and popcorn with employees.

Findlay, Ohio

Employees at our Findlay campus celebrated Earth Day by sharing information about our Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC)-certified sites and sustainable landscapes while distributing pollinator seed packets, garden gloves and popcorn. The campus also hosted its first-ever Swag Swap, giving Marathon-branded items a new home and extending their life. The event generated strong participation and excitement, with nearly all available swag successfully repurposed.

Garyville, Louisiana

Ahead of Earth Day, employee volunteers from our Garyville refinery helped plant 500 trees on the Maurepas Landbridge in St. John the Baptist Parish, supporting ongoing restoration efforts in the Lake Maurepas wetlands.

A representative from Pontchartrain Conservancy said every tree strengthens this important natural line of defense and supports a more resilient coast. Together, these efforts help reduce storm surge, preserve vital wetlands and strengthen Louisiana’s natural defenses against hurricanes, tropical systems and ongoing coastal erosion.

Louisville, Kentucky

MPLX’s Logistics & Storage Environment and Safety team partnered with TreesLouisville to plant 75 trees at Doss High School in Louisville. The team coordinated this hands-on community service project as part of its annual meeting held in the city. The newly planted trees support TreesLouisville’s work to grow the urban tree canopy and invest in a campus that will benefit students, staff and neighbors for years to come. As the trees mature, they’ll provide shade and cooling, help reduce the urban heat island effect, intercept stormwater runoff and improve air quality. TreesLouisville staff led the planting and shared best practices so each tree was set up to thrive.

Robinson, Illinois

Robinson refinery employees hosted Earth Day activities for nearly 100 Washington Elementary School kindergarten students at Washington Park’s Meserve Cabin. Employee volunteers guided students through hands-on stations focused on recycling, nature exploration and kite flying. Each student also received a kite to take home.

San Antonio, Texas

Our San Antonio office hosted its annual Earth Day Fair and recycling events. Vendors highlighted sustainability initiatives and distributed giveaways, while we provided information on our sustainable landscapes program and promoted our Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) Certifications. Employees also participated in our first-ever Swag Swap, where donated branded merchandise and apparel were made available to other employees at no cost to help give the swag a new life.

Marathon sponsored an Adopt-A-Highway area along FM 3159 in Spring Branch near San Antonio. Volunteers spent a Saturday morning cleaning up a section of roadway.

“The highway cleanup event went smoothly, and our small group was able to work efficiently and make a visible difference,” said John Longanbach, Lead Project Controls Specialist. “This event is important to me because it shows that even a modest effort can positively impact our community.”

Texas City, Texas

Volunteers at our Galveston Bay refinery in Texas City marked their third annual tree-planting at Cooper’s Landing, adding 70 native trees to expand a growing wildlife habitat. Employees and contractors teamed up with community partners and students from Texas City ISD to plant a diverse mix of species selected to strengthen biodiversity and long-term ecosystem health. The effort, supported by nonprofit partner Trees For Houston, has helped more than 220 native trees take root at the site over the past three years, turning the area into a thriving habitat for birds, pollinators and other wildlife.

Zelienople, Pennsylvania

A team from MPLX’s Bluestone natural gas processing complex in Pennsylvania completed an Earth Day project at Zelienople Community Park for their fourth consecutive year. The group planted trees, cleaned up flower beds and laid fresh mulch.
