For 32 consecutive years, Marathon Petroleum’s Garyville refinery in Louisiana has maintained one of the nation’s highest standards for workplace safety.

The refinery has again been recertified as a Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) Star site by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), continuing a distinction Garyville has held since 1994.

Garyville’s history with VPP goes back even further. The refinery began working with OSHA in the 1980s as the agency developed the program and later became the first refinery in Louisiana to earn VPP Star status. Over the decades, Garyville has helped set the standard for safety excellence and remains among the longest-running VPP Star refineries in the country.

VPP Star is OSHA’s highest level of recognition for workplaces with comprehensive safety and health management systems and a strong commitment from employees and management.

“This achievement demonstrates that safety remains a foundational commitment at Garyville and a key part of how we operate every day.”

“Maintaining VPP Star status for 32 consecutive years reflects the dedication of every employee and contractor who works safely, looks out for one another, and continuously seeks opportunities to improve,” said Holly Jackson, Vice President of Refining at the Garyville refinery. “This achievement demonstrates that safety remains a foundational commitment at Garyville and a key part of how we operate every day.”

This year’s recertification included interviews with dozens of employees and contractors, refinery tours and a review of safety programs. Evaluators highlighted the pride and engagement of the workforce, and the initial review concluded with no findings or corrective actions.

The refinery’s consecutive VPP Star status, which reached 30 years in fall 2024, continues to make it one of the longest-running participants in the country.

OSHA followed with a closer look at lessons learned from previous incidents and improvements made since. The review found Garyville continues to meet the high safety standards required for VPP Star status, recognizing its strong safety culture, ongoing improvements and commitment to protecting its workforce.

“This recertification validates the strong safety culture that exists at Garyville and the innovative work being done across the refinery,” said Jeremy Beasley, Refining Environmental, Safety & Security Director at the Garyville refinery. “From Digital Transformation and Corrosion Management initiatives to improvements in energy isolation, emergency response and process safety, our workforce continues to find new ways to improve reliability and protect people. Achieving 32 years of VPP Star status is an accomplishment we should all be proud of.”
