At its annual Celebration of Excellence event in March, United Way of the River Cities (UWRC) named Marathon Petroleum’s Catlettsburg refinery the 2023 recipient of its prestigious Cornerstone Award, honoring the refinery and its employees for demonstrating extraordinary commitment, leadership and overall impact on the community.

The Cornerstone Award is given in recognition of the work done by a business or organization during the previous year and for investments between $20,000 and $49,999 given to UWRC campaigns.

“At Marathon, we understand the important role the United Way plays here in our community and why it’s equally important to support the many programs they support throughout the year.”

“We cannot thank Marathon enough for its steadfast commitment to the entire Tri-State area, whether it’s through monetary investments or the many hours of volunteer work their team members put in across our shared communities every year,” said Bill Rosenberger, Director of Resource Development, UWRC.

Sheila Fraley, Adv. ESG and Stakeholder Engagement Representative at Marathon, accepted the award on behalf of the refinery.

“At Marathon, we understand the important role the United Way plays here in our community and why it’s equally important to support the many programs they support throughout the year,” said Fraley.

Marathon is also one of the 2023 Lead Sponsors of the nonprofit’s United Together Community GiveBox, located in Huntington, West Virginia. A pantry box for food, the GiveBox can also accept clothing donations, school supplies and other everyday items people may need. Other contributions include volunteering at the annual Week of Caring event in the spring and its Read Across the Tri-State event in the fall.
