The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Kenai Peninsula (BGCKP) opened the doors to its new clubhouse on Aug. 20 and welcomed children from three separate facilities.

“We officially combined three clubs into one to better support children in our area,” said Shanette Wik, CEO of BGCKP. “Enrollment numbers are up, and everyone is excited about the positive changes on the campus.”

The facility hosted a grand opening and ribbon cutting event earlier in the summer to celebrate the recent improvements and upgrades that will benefit the community. The Boys & Girls Clubs opened a new gym, childcare center and commercial kitchen in May.

Marathon Petroleum’s Kenai refinery is a major supporter of the project, donating $50,000 to fund the BGCKP playground and give local children a safe place to play.

“We align our community investment funding with our focus on safe and thriving communities,” said Bruce Jackman, Vice President of Refining at the Kenai refinery. “It’s truly inspiring to be able to be a small part of what the Boys & Girls Clubs is doing for the children here.”

BGCKP said that children are helping to design the playground equipment. A new fence around the play area was recently completed to help keep children safe.
