MPC awards grants to first responders

First responders play an important role in the communities where MPC operates. Emergencies at MPC facilities can present unique challenges to first responders, and a safe response often requires special training and equipment. To meet this need, our employees host regular drills with first responders, and MPC organizations like Terminal, Transport and Rail (TT&R) offer grants to help these agencies purchase the equipment to better serve their communities. Last year, TT&R’s First Responder Grant Program gave donations to more than 20 agencies across MPC’s footprint.

The TT&R First Responder Grant Program awarded $75,000 to first responders in 2017. Fire departments, police departments and other emergency-based nonprofit agencies are eligible for the grants, each in value of up to $5,000 per agency. All recipients are nominated by a TT&R manager or supervisor who partners with the first responders on a regular basis.

This partnership, strengthened through regular communication and onsite drills, helps reveal to MPC employees the needs of our communities’ first responders. The Nashville Fire Department and the Tampa Fire Department are two of 21 organizations that received funding through the grant program.

As a result of a drill that the Nashville Fire Department participated in with MPC personnel, the fire department was awarded a grant to purchase new firefighting equipment that would expedite the department’s response time. During the drill, Nashville firefighters reviewed the process safety and fire suppression systems on MPC’s site. Approximately 30 firefighters attended.

Also in Nashville, the Nashville Special Ops division assisted MPC in developing a pilot course on how to effectively and safely respond to a barge incident. The course was provided by MPC’s marine and TT&R organizations along with Williams Fire and Hazard Control to approximately 90 Nashville firefighters, who had the opportunity to tour MPC facilities, including a barge.

In Florida, the Tampa Fire Department trained to respond to a tanker rollover product release. The recently-awarded grant funds from MPC will be used to purchase supplies that will significantly improve the department’s response capability and reduce environmental and financial costs associated with an incident.

The benefits of equipment and training acquired through these initiatives go far beyond MPC. First responders can use the new supplies and their greater awareness of response techniques to better protect and respond to any emergency in the communities where MPC operates. MPC’s company-wide effort to strengthen relationships with first responders is but one example of the company’s mission to support and strengthen the communities where we operate.
