MPC’s Los Angeles refinery recently awarded $25,000 to Los Angeles Harbor College (LAHC). The donation was in support of the first class of LAHC STEM scholars.

The donation was used to award 20 STEM students $500 scholarships. Recipients had to have met financial need and grade point requirements, met with their STEM counselor to update their educational plan and write a 500-word essay on their passion for STEM and their personal educational journey overcoming obstacles. The college will have another round of awardees in spring 2019, in conjunction with the total college scholarship program.

LAHC’s STEM program is growing, targeting underrepresented demographics in the STEM industry, such as Hispanics, women and low-income students.

“The foundation is committed to helping create cleaner, safer, well-educated communities where we operate,” said Senior Government and Public Affairs Specialist Olga G. Chavez. “We are proud to support Los Angeles Harbor College and those exceptional students interested in pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and math.”
