Race Preview
McCumbee, Petty and Labonte to Pilot No. 45 Dodge
Trio to Split Next Three Starts for Petty Enterprises
Petty Enterprises, the winningest organization in NASCAR history, announces its driver lineup for the No. 45 Marathon American Spirit Motor Oil Dodge through the August 17th NASCAR Sprint Cup race at the Michigan International Speedway. Chad McCumbee, Kyle Petty and Terry Labonte will each compete in one event over the next three weeks.
“Chad, Kyle and Terry will be competing at places where they have all had success in the past,” said Petty Enterprises Vice President of Race Operations Robbie Loomis. “That should put the No. 45 team in the best position possible to gain points on the teams in front of us in owner points. Everyone at Petty Enterprises is committed to doing whatever it takes to get this team back inside the top-35. That is one of our highest priorities as an organization.”
McCumbee, 23, will attempt to make his first Sprint Cup start of the season this weekend at the Pocono (Pa.) Raceway. He made his first career Sprint Cup start at Pocono in 2007, finishing 25th. McCumbee also picked up an ARCA RE/MAX Series victory at Pocono last year. He currently competes full-time in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series where he is 12th in points.
Petty will return to the seat of the No. 45 Dodge for the August 10 event at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International. This will be the first start for Petty since the Coca-Cola 600 in May. His hiatus included at six-race stint in the TNT Sports booth where he covered the Sprint Cup Series.
“We’re all excited to see Kyle back in the No. 45 Marathon Dodge at Watkins Glen,” said Loomis. “He has been a great road course racer throughout his career. I know he is looking forward to it as well so we are going up there with a lot of confidence that we will have a solid run.”
Labonte, who has competed in seven races in the No. 45 Dodge this season, will make his eighth start at the Michigan International Speedway on August 17th. He owns seven top-fives, 13 top-tens and two poles in his career at Michigan.
Quotes from Chad McCumbee
“I went to Pocono last year for my first Cup race with the No. 45 Marathon American Spirit Motor Oil Dodge and had a strong run. We had a top-15 car, but the race was shortened due to rain and we never had a chance to improve the car even more. If we can put that kind of car on the track again I’m confident that we will have a good point’s day. That is our focus right now. We need to gain as many points as we can on the cars in front of us in the owner point’s standings.”
“Winning the ARCA race for Petty Enterprises at Pocono last year is definitely one of the highlights of my career. You could see the excitement on the face of ‘The King’ when he came to Victory Lane. I want to do that again. I want everyone in this organization to get excited and have confidence when I step into the car. ‘The King,’ Kyle, Robbie, everyone at Petty Enterprises has given me a great opportunity. I’m going to make the most of it.”
“I’ve done some testing for Petty Enterprises this year and I think that’s helped me a lot with the new car. After Chicagoland we loaded up the test team and went to Nashville to work on some stuff for Indy. We hit on a few things and you could see it with both the No. 43 and No. 45 cars at the Brickyard. They were competitive, under the circumstances. A lot of that information should translate over to Pocono this weekend too.”

Carl Edwards picked up his fourth win of the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup season in Sunday’s Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 at the Pocono Raceway. In another race that came down to fuel mileage at the 2.5-mile triangle, Edwards had enough to beat Tony Stewart to the checkered flag. Several front-running cars began to run out of fuel as they made their way down the long frontstretch at Pocono to take the checkered.
For the second year in a row, rain disrupted a race at Pocono. The 2007 “spring” race was shortened due to inclement weather. This race featured a 45-minute red flag period following a caution for rain on lap 127. However, the race was able to restart and complete all of the scheduled 500 miles. Rain also washed out both of Saturday’s practice sessions.
Chad McCumbee and the No. 45 Marathon American Spirit Motor Oil Dodge team finished 17th in Sunday’s event. The finish is the highest of McCumbee’s Sprint Cup career. He started the race from the 34th position and he had problems early. His chassis was ‘loose’ at the start of the race, but he also experienced minor brake problems. The two issues combined to cause McCumbee to lose a lap to the leaders, who were setting a blistering early pace. Crew chief Stewart Cooper and the team gradually began to get the car comfortable for McCumbee so that they would be able to capitalize on a ‘Lucky Dog’ Award. The ‘Lucky Dog’ came at the lap 127 caution for rain. From that point on, McCumbee was one of the fastest cars on the racetrack. He has always enjoyed racing at Pocono’s unusual layout and it showed as he passed 10 cars for position in the last 20 laps. McCumbee made 122 green flag passes on the day, good for 13th out of the 43 drivers in the field. McCumbee’s finish moved the No. 45 Dodge up one position in Sprint Cup owner points.
“We had a few things to work out at the start of the race and we can probably attribute that to not having been able to practice on Saturday,” said McCumbee. “You hate to lose a lap, but it’s not too bad here because you know that you can put yourself in position to pick up a ‘Lucky Dog.’ We were fortunate to do that. I’ll tell you, my car was flying over those last two runs. That’s what you want. You need your last couple of runs to be your best and Stewart did a great job in giving me a fast car at the end.”
Bobby Labonte and the No. 43 Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge team finished 33rd on Sunday. Labonte is a three time winner at Pocono and he swept both races in 1999. He began the race from the 11th position, a solid qualifying effort for the team. When the green flag fell, Labonte radioed to crew chief Jeff Meendering that he had a ‘tight’ racecar in the middle of turn 3, but a ‘loose’ car everywhere else. Meendering made adjustments to the track bar, tire pressures and chassis, which improved the car, but it was still ‘loose’ off of each of the flat corners at Pocono. After the rain delay, Labonte drove back up to the 11th position. However, the handling of the No. 43 Dodge began to deteriorate and Meendering called Labonte down pit road on several occasions to improve the condition. This relegated him to 33rd.
“None of us are sure what exactly happened,” stated Labonte. “We’ve had a fast car since we unloaded on Friday, but it seemed like a different car today. Missing practice yesterday obviously hurt us. We tried using strategy to gain a few spots, but it was hard to come up with a strategy today. You didn’t know if the rain would hold out or not. I’m proud of my team because they worked hard today.”
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will head to Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International this weekend for the Centurion Boats at the Glen. Friday’s qualifying session will be telecast on ESPN2. It will be broadcast on the Motor Racing Network (MRN) and Sirius Channel 128.
