NASCAR NMPA Chex® Most Popular Driver Award Tops One Million Mark
Richard Petty Discusses Winning NASCAR NMPA Chex® Most Popular Driver Award

Huntersville, N.C. (July 9, 2008) – Over one million voters have now made their vote count for the 2008 NASCAR NMPA Chex® Most Popular Driver Award. Powered by SceneDaily.com, fans are continuing to log on daily to www.chexmostpopulardriver.com and vote for one of NASCAR’s most prestigious awards in the sport.

The award was first administered in 1956 and has been won by legends such as Bobby Alison, Cale Yarborough, David Pearson, and Richard Petty among others. In fact, Petty knows all too well the meaning of winning this award. “The King” of NASCAR is considered one of the greatest and most popular drivers of NASCAR’s past and present. Petty has won the Chex® Most Popular Driver Award nine times in his career. It’s an honor that is not lost on Petty.

“Anytime you win a ‘Most Popular’ award it’s great. It is something that you really don’t work for, but rather it just happens,” said the seven-time champion Petty. “The Chex® Most Popular Driver Award makes the driver feel good because you’re not out there to be the most popular driver; you’re out there to win races. You win it at the end of the season, and it’s like a big bonus.”

“I was always just doing my job, trying to get along with people and win races,” continued Petty. “It just so happened, at the end of the year they call you up and tell you that you won the ‘Most Popular’ award. It makes you feel like you had a good year, even if on the race track, it wasn’t a good year.”

Petty joins Bill Elliott and Dale Earnhardt Jr. as the only other drivers to have won the award five consecutive times since the inception of the award. Petty won the award in 1962, 64, 68, and 1974-78. Petty sees why Dale Earnhardt Jr. has been a fan favorite for the past five years.

“Over the years, his dad was popular. I think Dale Earnhardt Jr. creates so much of his own popularity because he is a completely different individual than the majority,” said Petty. “He talks and tells it like it is. I think people appreciate that.”

Fans are encouraged to vote once a day, every day for their favorite driver, from among more than 40 popular Sprint Cup drivers. The current Top 10 drivers in alphabetical order are: Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Carl Edwards, Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne, Matt Kenseth, Bobby Labonte, Tony Stewart, and Michael Waltrip. There is still plenty of time left to vote, as voting continues until the end of the season. The winner will be announced at the NASCAR NMPA Myers Brothers Luncheon in New York City in December.

Chex® Cereal has been on breakfast tables for more than 60 years and has been a proud sponsor of the NASCAR NMPA Most Popular Driver Award since 2005. Voters are not only encouraged to vote every day for their favorite driver, but are also reminded to start their engines with Chex® cereal and enjoy race day with their favorite Chex® recipes from www.Chex.com.
