McCumbee to Fill In For Petty at Michigan
Petty To Return at Bristol

Petty Enterprises announces development driver Chad McCumbee will substitute for Kyle Petty in the #45 Marathon American Spirit Motor Oil Dodge for Sunday’s 3M Performance 400 at the Michigan International Speedway. Petty is recovering from a broken right hand after last weeks race at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International.

McCumbee, 23, made his NASCAR Nextel Cup Series debut at the Pocono (Penn.) Raceway earlier this year in the #45 Petty Enterprises Dodge. He finished 25th. He has also competed and won in ARCA Series competition and has tested extensively for Petty Enterprises this season. The organization is planning to run McCumbee in the NASCAR Busch Series in 2008.

“I am here to help in any way that I can,” said McCumbee. “The priority is getting Kyle back in the car as soon as possible. The goal this weekend is to get a solid finish for this team. I have experience in the Craftsman Truck Series at the track. Billy (Wilburn, crew chief) and I have had great communication too. Hopefully we can have a good run on Sunday.”

Petty completed a successful surgery on his hand on Tuesday in North Carolina. Petty is expected to return to the driver’s seat for next week’s Sharpie 500 at the Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.

“I’ve got to thank Chad for everything he’s done for us,” said Petty. “We’ve spent a lot of time with him and moving him along. It made a lot of sense for us to put him in the car this weekend. He did a great job at Pocono and we are expecting the same this weekend.”

Qualifying Report

QUALIFYING RESULTS:
1. Jeff Gordon, Chevrolet, 38.090 seconds, 189.026 miles per hour
2. Greg Biffle, Ford, 38.159 seconds, 188.684 miles per hour
3. Kasey Kahne, Dodge, 38.193 seconds, 188.516 miles per hour
4. Bobby Labonte, Dodge, 38.271 seconds, 188.132 miles per hour
5. Elliot Sadler, Dodge, 38.293 seconds, 188.024 miles per hour
42. Chad McCumbee, Dodge, 39.871 seconds, 180.582 miles per hour

Jeff Gordon welcomed back crew chief Steve Letarte with the pole position for Sunday’s 3M Performance 400 at the Michigan International Speedway. The final two cars of the qualifying session both set fast time, with Gordon edging Greg Biffle for the top spot.

The weather around the Brooklyn, Mich. track was of “chamber of commerce quality” as temperatures topped out in the high 70’s. The already mild temperatures cooled even more as the session waned into the final handful of cars. This played a large role in determining who would lead the field of 43 cars to the green flag on Sunday.

Bobby Labonte and the #43 Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge team will roll off from the fourth position. It’s the team’s best qualifying effort since starting third for the race at Dover (Del.) International Speedway in June. New crew chief Doug Randolph has made a seamless transition over to the team as Labonte could be found at the top of the charts all afternoon. With a little more tweaking during tomorrow’s two practice sessions, the three-time Michigan winner will be poised for his best finish of the season.

“First I want to say that our thoughts and prayers are with Paul Andrews for a speedy recovery. He is still a part of this family and we are all pulling for him to get back to his old form,” Labonte said of his former crew chief.

“As for the car, I could not be happier,” continued Labonte. “When we come to Michigan everyone talks about how you can run so many different lines, depending on where you car is working the best. That’s true, but you still want your car to have a nice balance. The #43 Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge has that. Now we are going to work on getting it to stay that way on long runs because you have those here at Michigan.”

“Doug has brought some fresh ideas to the team and the guys have responded well to him. He is a guy with a lot of experience. He has meshed all of those experiences together to become a very well-rounded crew chief.”

Chad McCumbee and the #45 Marathon American Spirit Motor Oil team will start 42nd in Sunday’s event. McCumbee is substituting for Kyle Petty this weekend as Petty recovers from a broken hand suffered last Sunday at Watkins Glen (N.Y) International. The team struggled to make a fast lap, but feel that the car will be much improved when it is converted over to the race setup.

“The car kept going back and forth from loose to tight all day,” sounded McCumbee. “It one way it is encouraging because the chassis is very responsive to changes. Some chassis are stubborn. They don’t care what you do to them, but that is not the case with this one. We just need to forget about today and zero in on what the car needs tomorrow. I’ve always considered myself a better racer than qualifier.”

Friday’s qualifying session was televised live nationally by SPEED Channel and broadcast on MRN Radio. The 3M Performance 400 will be televised live on ESPN and broadcast live on MRN Radio. The race is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. (EDT).
