Qualifying Results
February 29, 2008
1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway; Las Vegas, N.V.
QUALIFYING RESULTS:
1. Kyle Busch, Toyota
2. Carl Edwards, Ford
3. Jeff Gordon, Chevrolet
4. Mark Martin, Chevrolet
5. Mike Skinner, Toyota
39. Bobby Labonte, Cheerios “Circle of Helping Hearts” Dodge
41. Kyle Petty, Wells Fargo Dodge
NASCAR Sprint Cup points leader Kyle Busch continues his hot streak as he took the pole for Sunday’s UAW-Dodge 400 at the Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway (LVMS). Busch nipped Carl Edwards, who will start second for the event, just minutes after Edwards thought he had the pole.
Bobby Labonte and the #43 Dodge team will start the race from the 39th position. Labonte had a fast primary car during the morning practice session. However, on a lap that would have put him near the top of the time sheet, the Dodge Charger came around on Labonte and hit the outside wall. The team was forced to pull out the backup car for the 400-miler. In all, six Dodges were involved in practice accidents.
“That deal was similar to Talladega last year when the car jumped around on me,” said Labonte. “It was really good for the early part of practice and it was going to be a great racecar. I don’t know. We never got any practice with the backup so we didn’t qualify well. But we’ll get it dialed in tomorrow.”
T he No. 45 Dodge, driven by Kyle Petty, will roll of 41st for Sunday’s event. The team knocked off the 22nd fastest lap in practice and the car is quick in race trim. But the team drew an early qualifying slot and the car was not as good in the heat of the day. The 1.5-mile ovals, such as LVMS, have been good to Petty and the No. 45 Wells Fargo team over recent years. They are poised for a good finish on Sunday.
“I’m happy with the car,” sounded Petty. “We did have a bad draw for qualifying, but that’s the way it goes. The only bad part about that is we won’t get the best pit stall. I would rather be fast on Sunday than Friday. This is another place that we tested over the winter so we feel like we have something we can work with for the race.”
Sunday’s race will be televised live on FOX and broadcast live on MRN Radio. The race coverage is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. (EST).

Race Results
March 2, 2008
1.5-mile Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway
RACE RESULTS:
1. Carl Edwards, Ford
2. Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Chevrolet
3. Greg Biffle, Ford
4. Kevin Harvick, Chevrolet
5. Jeff Burton, Chevrolet
17. Bobby Labonte, Cheerios “Circle of Helping Hearts” Dodge
32. Kyle Petty, Wells Fargo Dodge
Carl Edwards made it two NASCAR Sprint Cup wins in a row as he crossed the finish line first in Sunday’s UAW-Dodge 400 at the Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway. The win moves Edwards into the lead in the Sprint Cup point’s standings. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. grabbed the runner-up position, his highest points-paying finish with his new Hendrick Motorsports team.
Bobby Labonte and the 43 Dodge team scored a 16th place finish in Sunday’s event. The team was forced to bring out the backup car as a result of a crash during Friday’s practice session. Labonte and crew chief Jeff Meendering were optimistic that they could get the backup to perform as well as the primary. As the green flag fell for the start of the race, it appeared that they had hit on a great setup. Labonte drove up from his 39th starting position into the top-12 by lap 53. The No. 43 Dodge was one of the faster cars on the track during long green flag runs. However, as the race progressed, the car grew tighter. Meendering made heavy adjustments to the chassis, but nothing allowed the car to rotate to Labonte’s liking.
“I don’t know if we just didn’t stay on top of the changing track conditions, but the car wasn’t the same at the end of the race,” sounded Labonte. “When they dropped the green it was so fast. I thought we were in for a sure top-10, maybe top-5. The pit crew was great and they kept our track position. Jeff did everything he could, but it was just super tight at the end. It was still a decent point’s day for us. We’ll go to Atlanta looking to gain some more ground.”
Kyle Petty and the No. 45 team finished Sunday’s event in 32nd position. He was also involved in a practice skirmish on Saturday afternoon, but the team did a masterful job in repairing the Dodge Charger without having to use the backup. Petty had a car that was a rocket during the early stages of the race as well. After staying out during green flag pit stops, Petty found himself running 12th. However, the caution flag did not fall his way. Still, Petty was running mid-pack when the handling of the car went away. This ended what was a promising point’s day.
“I’ll tell you, I could not be prouder of the guys on this team,” said Petty. “The wreck on Saturday was not our fault, but it still put us in a bind. These guys went to work and put a very fast racecar on the track today. That’s really encouraging. But the track really changed a lot between the green and the checkered. It’s a little bit of a mystery to Billy (Wilburn, crew chief) and I as to how the handling went away like that.”
The next race for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will be Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 500 from the Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway. Sunday’s race will be televised live on FOX and broadcast live on PRN. Race coverage will begin at 1:30 EST.
