Race Preview

Owner Points No Longer a Worry for Petty
Driver Locked Into First Five Races of 2008

This weekend, Kyle Petty and the #45 Marathon American Spirit Motor Oil Dodge team will travel to the 1.5-mile Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway (HMS) for Sunday’s NASCAR Nextel Cup Series season finale.

By virtue of his finish at the Phoenix (Ariz.) International Raceway last weekend, Petty has secured a finish inside the top-35 in the NASCAR Nextel Cup owner point’s standings. He will be locked into the first five events of the 2008 season, including the 50th running of the Daytona 500. Having met this goal, Petty can head to HMS with nothing but racing on his mind.

Petty has made five starts at HMS. His best finish came in the inaugural race in 1999 when he crossed the finish line in the seventh position.

Comments from Petty as he prepares for Sunday’s 400 mile event:
“I told my team in Phoenix that we weren’t racing the entire field on Sunday. We just had to focus on beating the cars that we were racing for the top-35. Our cars had been great over the last several races, but we needed to finish the season strong. I’m really proud of how the guys responded. We’ve locked ourselves in to the first five races next year and that is a big relief.”

“Now we can go to Homestead and just race our tails off. We don’t have to be cautious or hold anything back. It’ll be kind of like the all-star race for us. Just go out there and let the rough side drag. You can have a lot of fun at Homestead when you get aggressive with the setup.”

“Sunday’s race is going to be a little bittersweet, man. It’s the last race with the ‘standard’ car. I’ve had some good runs of the years with this car in my career. And Petty Enterprises has made a lot of gains with our intermediate program with this car. Now these cars are obsolete. But with the new Dodge Avenger comes progress. The new car will be good for our sport.”

“There has been some talk over the last few years about taking the last race away from Homestead. I personally think it is a great place to end the season. In a perfect world, NASCAR would prefer to have five or six guys going into Homestead with a chance to win the championship. You want to put them on a track where they can show all of their talent. A track where they can walk away, win or lose, knowing that they gave it everything they had. A track where the finish is not influenced by someone else. Homestead has all of that.”

“It’s hard to believe that the next time we go to the track for a race weekend, it will be the 50th Daytona 500. Everyone always puts a lot of time and effort into the Daytona 500. There will be more than ever during this off-season. We will have a lot of eyes on us next year. Plus, the race will be run with the new car. Looking back over my career I can’t think of a more important winter than the one coming up.”

Race Results

FINAL RESULTS:
1. Matt Kenseth, Ford
2. Kurt Busch, Dodge
3. Denny Hamlin, Chevrolet
4. Jeff Gordon, Chevrolet
5. Carl Edwards, Dodge
23. Bobby Labonte, #43 Dodge
34. Kyle Petty, #45 Marathon American Spirit Motor Oil Dodge

OVERVIEW:
Jimmie Johnson won his second consecutive NASCAR Nextel Cup championship Sunday night at the 1.5-mile Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway. Matt Kenseth won the race, but it was Johnson, who beat Jeff Gordon by 77 points for the championship, who took all the glory.

Kenseth dominated Sunday’s race. It was his last with his long time crew chief Robbie Reiser who will move to a GM role within Roush Fenway Racing in 2008. The duo hit on the perfect setup once the sun set during the twilight event. Kenseth lead the majority of the race and was never really challenged.

All Johnson had to do was finish 18 or better on Sunday to secure the championship. He finished seventh, only three spots behind Gordon. Gordon ran strong all afternoon, but Johnson did as well- not opening any doors for Gordon. Johnson didn’t make any mistakes on the track and his team did their job in the pits. Johnson will celebrate his second championship in New York City at the annual NASCAR Nextel Cup award banquet in two weeks.

Bobby Labonte and the #43 Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge team coasted to a 23 place finish in Sunday’s race. The cars engine expired on the last lap, but Labonte was able to get back around to cross the line on the last lap. The dramatic finish for the team secured them 18 in championship points. It’s the first time since 1999 that the team has finished the year in the top 20. They finished the season with three top-10 finishes and completed over 95 percent of their laps.

“The guys worked hard all season,” said Labonte. “We’re going to look at this as another step towards growing and getting better. We did some good things this season, but we can improve. I appreciate all the support from everyone.”

Kyle Petty and the #45 Marathon American Spirit Motor Oil Dodge team finished 34 in Sunday’s NASCAR Nextel Cup season finale at the Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway. Petty finished the 2007 season inside the top-35 in Nextel Cup owner points and is locked into the first five races of the 2008 season.

1.5-mile ovals, like Homestead, had been one of the strong suits for Petty this season. His best finish of the season came at the Lowe’s (N.C) Motor Speedway when he finished third in the Coca-Cola 600. Handling, however, proved to be a premium at Homestead because the race began during the day and concluded in the evening. Early in the event, Petty was among several racecars that were having problems in turns three and four. The sun beamed down on that part of the racetrack longer than anywhere else, which caused the surface to have less grip. As the sun fell, the track gained grip and helped Petty with his handling issue. Unfortunately the leaders had set such a fast pace that Petty was down a couple of laps by the time the car came around to his liking.

“We’ve had a good season,” said Petty. “As a team, we should be proud of ourselves in how we fought and stayed inside the top-35 in owner points. Homestead wasn’t quite the finish to the season that we were looking for, but we have a lot of positives that we can build on for next season. Now we’ll go into the off-season program and get the Dodge Avenger ready for Daytona.”
