Race Preview
Quotes from Kyle Petty:
“The finish didn’t show how good they ran, but I’m encouraged by the race that Chad and the rest of the No. 45 Wells Fargo Dodge guys had at Loudon. Once they got their lap back they were putting down some fast times. That gives me confidence that we can have a similar race this weekend. Stewart (Cooper, crew chief) is becoming more and more comfortable with these cars each race. I can see progress being made each week.”
“You know, there are some tracks that you just take to the first time you race there. For me two of those tracks were Rockingham and Dover. I always enjoyed the way you raced at those places; the mindset that it took to go 500 miles, which used to be the distance at Dover. Dover is a beast of a racetrack and it’s probably the most physically demanding track on the schedule. But I think everyone enjoys it because it’s so unique.”
“I’ll never forget that 1995 win at Dover. We started 37th that day and wound up leading over half of the race. We had a really fast racecar, but we were also had luck on our side. You have to have both to win any race. The last 10 laps of that race were intense. I had a pretty big lead, but Bobby (Labonte) was running me down by over five car lengths a lap. He pulled to the outside of me on the last lap and we had a heck of a race to the finish line. That race was a lot of fun, especially since Bobby and I are teammates now.”
Race Qualifying
1. Jeff Gordon, Chevrolet
2. Mark Martin, Chevrolet
3. Denny Hamlin, Toyota
4. Kurt Busch, Dodge
5. Greg Biffle, Ford
38. Kyle Petty, No. 45 Wells Fargo Dodge
42. Bobby Labonte, No. 43 Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge
Jeff Gordon, trying to jump back into the “Chase for the Sprint Cup,” won the pole for Sunday’s Camping World RV 400 at the Dover International Speedway. Mark Martin and Kurt Busch were the non-Chase contenders to crash the top-5 party as they were interspersed between “Chasers” Denny Hamlin and Greg Biffle. Each manufacturer placed a car inside the top-5.
Kyle Petty and the No. 45 Dodge team will start tomorrow’s race from the 38th position. This will be Petty’s 52nd start at the “Monster Mile,” where he owns one win. The team had a solid practice session in preparation for qualifying, but the track conditions were not ideal as the sun was beaming on an otherwise cool Dover afternoon. The team, however, is confident heading into the weekend.
“We just didn’t have any forward bite,” said Petty. “That is critical here. We didn’t catch a break with the cloud cover and that didn’t do us any favors either. But I’m encouraged with the way we practiced. Each time out we continued to get better. We need to do the same thing tomorrow to get the Wells Fargo Dodge dialed in.”
Bobby Labonte and the No. 43 Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge team qualified 42nd for Sunday’s event. Labonte, who won the ‘spring’ race at Dover in 1999, had to deal with a car that was ‘loose’ during the practice sessions. Crew chief Jeff Meendering made adjustments to ‘tighten’ the chassis for qualifying, but they were a bit too much.
“We fought loose, loose, loose all practice, so we had to try something to tighten the car up,” said Labonte. “The adjustments were just a little too strong and the car was really tight. But at least we know that we went in the right direction and we have two practices tomorrow to find that middle ground.”

Despite going winless during the 26-race NASCAR Sprint Cup ‘regular season,’ Greg Biffle has thrown the gauntlet down when it matters the most. Biffle picked up his second consecutive victory in the “Chase for the Sprint Cup” in Sunday’s Camping World RV 400 at the Dover International Speedway. Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards made it a 1-2-3 finish for Roush Fenway Racing.
Biffle’s win moves him into a tie for second place in the standings with Johnson. The two are 10 points behind the leader, Edwards. Jeff Burton and Kevin Harvick, who moved up five spots on Sunday, round out the top-five.
Bobby Labonte and the No. 43 Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge team finished 14th on Sunday.
The finish is the second consecutive top-15 finish for the team as they looked determined to end the season on a strong note. Labonte began the race from the 42nd position, but he began to lay down some fast lap times early by moving to the top groove of the one-mile oval. When a caution flag flew on lap 64, Labonte found himself in the 29th position. From there the handling began to go away on the No. 43 Dodge and Labonte lost a lap to the leaders. He was able to gain that back, via a ‘Lucky Dog’ award on lap 156. Thanks to great work by the No. 43 pit crew, Labonte was able to drive inside the top-20 by lap 185. A long green flag run saw Labonte lose another lap to the leaders, but some great adjustments by crew chief Jeff Meendering allowed him to remain the first car one lap down and in position for another ‘Lucky Dog’ award. This came on lap 291. From that point on, Labonte had one of the fastest cars on the track. He had two of his best runs of the day inside the final 100 laps, when it mattered most. In typical fashion, Labonte has the second-most green flag passes with 62.
“We just couldn’t seem to get our Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge to turn good in the center of the corners especially the grip in the back of the car. I fought it all day. Fortunately, we had a couple Lucky Dogs that put us on the lead lap again and we were able to get the car good enough to bring home a top-15 finish. I’m proud of my guys. Jeff (Meendering, crew chief) did a good job on top of the pit box all day trying to get our car better and better. We’re not satisfied with 14th, but it could have been a lot worse.”
Kyle Petty and the No. 45 Dodge team came home 40th at Dover on Sunday. At the drop of the green flag, Petty had to deal with a ‘loose’ race car. Crew chief Stewart Cooper made some early track bar and wedge adjustments to get Petty comfortable. During the middle portions of the race, Petty radioed to Cooper that the adjustments had made the car more stable. However, on lap 276, Petty radioed that the car was too ‘loose’ to drive. The crew went to work in the garage to diagnose the problem, but lost many laps in the process. This relegated Petty to his finish of 40th.
“The car was really loose all day. It was a complete opposite of how it drove on Saturday and we didn’t make any changes,” said Petty. “We’re not sure what happened. Stewart and the guys did a good job because it was decent there in the middle of the race, but it didn’t last very long. We’ll take it back to the shop and try to find out if something failed.”
