Aliphatics Benzene Cumene Toluene Xylene

Xylene is a colorless, flammable, hydrocarbon liquid. It is part of the aromatic family of hydrocarbons. Xylene is primarily sold as an intermediate chemical feedstock that gets processed into plastics. It can also be found in paints and coatings, printing inks, adhesives, and flexible foams. Marathon Petroleum Company LLC (MPC) produces mixed xylenes, which is a mixture of all three xylene isomers: para-xylene, ortho-xylene, and ethyl-benzene.

Production Information
MPC produces xylene at the Catlettsburg, Kentucky refinery and xylene at the Texas City, Texas refinery. Xylene, along with the other aromatics, is produced using a liquid-liquid extraction process. The Catlettsburg, Kentucky refinery utilizes the Sulfolane process. The Texas City, Texas refinery uses the Udex process with a Carom co-solvent.

Transportation
MPC transports xylene by truck and rail out of the Catlettsburg refinery and by barge from Catlettsburg, Kentucky and Texas City, Texas.
