Toluene is a colorless, flammable, hydrocarbon liquid. It is part of the aromatic family of hydrocarbons. Toluene is primarily used in paints and coatings, printing inks, adhesives, and flexible foams. It is also widely used as a gasoline blendstock to increase octane. Marathon Petroleum Company LLC (MPC) produces nitration grade toluene.

Production Information
MPC produces nitration grade toluene at the Catlettsburg, Kentucky and Texas City, Texas refineries. Toluene, along with the other aromatics, is produced using a liquid-liquid extraction process. The Catlettsburg, Kentucky refinery utilizes the Sulfolane process. The Texas City, Texas refinery uses the Udex process with a Carom co-solvent.

Transportation
MPC transports nitration grade toluene by truck and rail out of the Catlettsburg refinery and by barge from Catlettsburg, Kentucky and Texas City, Texas.
