Benzene is a colorless, flammable, hydrocarbon liquid. It is part of the aromatic family and has a characteristic sweet odor. Benzene is a basic building block for further petrochemical processing, and is most often used to manufacture styrene, cyclohexane, and cumene.
Production Information
Marathon Petroleum Company LLC (MPC) produces benzene at the Catlettsburg, Kentucky and Texas City, Texas refineries. Benzene, along with other aromatics, is produced using a liquid-liquid extraction process. The Catlettsburg, Kentucky refinery utilizes the Sulfolane process. The Texas City, Texas refinery uses the Udex process with a Carom co-solvent.
Transportation Catlettsburg benzene production is used internally as a cumene feedstock. Benzene produced in Texas City is transported out of the refinery by barge.
