Cumene is a colorless, flammable, hydrocarbon liquid. It is part of the aromatic family and has a distinctive odor. Cumene is primarily used as a feedstock in the manufacture of phenol.
Marathon Petroleum Company LP (MPC) has cumene production capacity at its Catlettsburg, Kentucky refinery. Cumene is made by combining benzene and propylene feedstocks in the presence of a SPA (solid phosphoric acid) catalyst.
MPC transports cumene via barge and truck to Midwest and US Gulf Coast customers. When transporting via barge, typical quantities range from 3 - 6 million pounds of cumene.
