HELPING OUR CUSTOMERS HELP THEIR COMMUNITY

Atlas Park

Atlas Oil Company is one of Marathon’s premier customers in the state of Michigan.  One of the things that Marathon and Atlas CEO Sam Simon and his staff have in common are some basic core values in “doing the right thing” in the communities where they live and work.

Funds from Marathon’s Community Participation program recently helped Atlas fund a major community project, transforming an unsightly vacant lot across the street from their office in Taylor, Mich. into a community park. The property, which was owned by the city, was sitting vacant, and Sam Simon invited the mayor of Taylor to join him for discussion. A year and half later, on October 19, 2009, Atlas Park was officially dedicated. The result included a playscape for children, benches and beautiful landscaping.

“Sam really likes to give back to children and felt this was a great way to reach out to the Taylor community,” notes Bob Kenyon, vice president of Sales and Operations. “It is great to look out the office windows today and see children playing in the park. “We hope that the park will continue to be a favorite destination for everyone in the surrounding neighborhoods.”

In addition to monies contributed by Atlas, the generosity of suppliers and vendors played a large part in constructing Atlas Park. The park is one of many projects that “Atlas Cares,” an employee-directed philanthropic organization, has participated in. “Although the city will maintain much of the landscaping, it will be up to the Atlas Cares team to maintain the flower beds in the park throughout the year,” adds Kenyon.
