Pheidippides Greek runner trademarkThe Marathon Brand has been used to market refined products for more than 75 years. In 1930, The Ohio Oil Company (later renamed Marathon Oil Company) acquired:
  • The Marathon product name
  • The Pheidippides Greek runner trademark
  • The "Best in the long run" and "An American Company Serving America" slogans

These items were used at 376 retail outlets at that time.

Today, quality Marathon gasoline is available through approximately 4,600 Marathon locations in 17 Midwest and Southeast states. All locations are operated by independent entrepreneurs, proudly serving the motoring public as Marathon, "Fueling the American Spirit".
